Ionel Talpazan

1955-2015 · New York City, USA

At eight he saw a blue light hover over a Romanian field. He spent the rest of his life on a New York pavement drawing the spacecraft, inside and out.

The life

Talpazan was born in 1955 in PetrĂ¢chioaia, Romania, and raised in foster care. At eight, running from a beating, he saw an enormous blue light overhead and a glowing beam envelop him, an experience he understood as a UFO encounter that left him with knowledge of its technology. In March 1987 he escaped communist Romania by swimming the Danube into Yugoslavia, endured a refugee camp, and reached New York as a political refugee. Distrustful of dealers, he sold his work on the street, most often on Prince Street in SoHo, while living in a one-room Harlem apartment. He died in New York in 2015.

The work

More than a thousand drawings, paintings and sculptures of flying saucers, from ecstatic colour-saturated visions to precise cutaway diagrams labelling the propulsion systems of alien craft. The work sits exactly on the line between devotion and engineering. It is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the American Visionary Art Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Collection de l’Art Brut.

Why we love them

He treated one childhood vision as a lifetime research grant. Nobody has ever taken a mystery more seriously or drawn it more beautifully.
