b. 1967 · Venice Beach, California, USA
He draws with nothing but dots, millions of them, on sheets up to eight feet long, because for him the counting is the point.

The life
Benefiel was born in 1967 in Venice Beach, California, and has lived much of his life in New Mexico. After a breakdown in 1997 he was diagnosed with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, and drawing became the place where the compulsion could be put to work: stippling with technical pens, dot by dot, with no preliminary design, starting at the centre and working outward until the sheet is covered. He makes the work for nobody, hides finished pieces even from himself, and has destroyed whole bodies of work before letting anything circulate.
The work
Ink stippling on paper, the finished sheets stained with tea and furniture varnish wiped back with turpentine rags so they arrive looking decades old. Layered, hallucinatory figures built from memory and experience, some works five by eight feet. Held by the American Folk Art Museum in New York and the collection abcd in Paris.
Why we love them
He turned the exhausting arithmetic of compulsion into a discipline most trained artists could not survive a week of. Every dot is a decision.
