When Steve and I launched Studio Brut and sat down to record an interview about founding an outsider artist studio here in Swindon, we hoped people would listen. But, we didn’t expect this…
Off the back of that launch, we were contacted by an artist fresh from a global tour. They’d heard about what we’re building, were excited by our passion and commitment to outsider artists in our home town, and wanted to collaborate with us on a project. Yall know I have a background in theatre and am passionate about all things story telling, and well … do I have one heck of a cool story to invite you to become a part of…
We can’t give too much away, but here’s what we can share, loud and proud.
Penkiln Burn Moving Pictures are looking for 12 women to appear as extras in a scene from a 90-minute feature film, filmed here at our studio. It’s paid, it’s messy, and it involves painting directly over the work of said mysterious unnamed artist. Yes, really…. Wild right ?!
The story so far
Since 2014, a body of work has been travelling the world on a global tour, changing and evolving as it goes. Part of its’ final chapter, rather unexpectedly takes place here, in Swindon.
This is where the paintings get their final layer of paint. Twelve women will take over the work and paint 1,000 pink moons across it, and that moment will be captured as a scene in a feature film.
If you’ve followed Studio Brut from the start, you’ll know we care about raw, instinctive, hands-on making. This collection of artwork being taken over in a frenzy, in the middle of the night, painted over, broken and stitched back together by a room full of women by moonlight ? That’s pretty damn rock and roll.
It’s also a genuinely paid opportunity, in our own space, for artists who don’t usually get asked. That’s exactly the kind of door we set this studio up to open.

Painting pink moons and circles over the artwork

For some participants, sewing broken parts of the paintings back together with messy, visible stitching. No sewing skills needed, honestly, the messier the better
